As part of the Hosted by Apples and Bananas workshop, students creatively and playfully explored the theme of “host.” According to artist Edith Payer, openness and curiosity are essential to experiencing transformation through encounters with a guest.
The workshop began with a visit to the exhibition at Kunstraum Lakeside. In conversation with curator Gudrun Ratzinger, central questions surrounding the concept of “host” were discussed and related to the students’ own lives. The second part of the workshop took place at the Educational Lab. Edith Payer guided the students through the process, using drawing as a medium to jointly explore the nature of good hospitality. The students used fruits and vegetables as carriers for their work, applying their own designs to them using drawing and tattooing techniques. This resulted in visual metaphors for hospitality, relationships, permeability, and transformation. For instance, an apple became the host of a worm, or a banana turned into the hostess of fruit flies.
The designed objects—tattooed fruits and vegetables—were then arranged as still lifes, photographed, and used as motifs for postcards. These postcards, in turn, function as “guests” themselves, seeking entry into new living environments and continuing the theme of hospitality.
